Impetigo is a common and contagious skin infection. It isn't usually serious, and treatment helps it clear faster and stops it spreading.

Adults and children aged 1 and over. It's free if you don't usually pay for prescriptions. If you do, any medicine supplied costs the standard NHS prescription charge.
Common symptoms
- Red sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth
- Sores that burst and leave golden-brown crusts
- Itchy or sore skin
How it works
- Walk in or book. Ask to see the pharmacist. You don't need a GP appointment or referral.
- Consultation. In a private room, the pharmacist asks about your symptoms and medical history and checks whether you meet the NHS criteria.
- Treatment or referral. If suitable, you'll get treatment and aftercare advice. If not, we'll give you advice or refer you to the right service.
When to get urgent help
Call 111 or go to A&E if you have the infection spreading quickly, or you or your child feeling very unwell. In an emergency, call 999.
