Shingles is a painful rash caused by the chickenpox virus becoming active again. Early treatment can help, so see a pharmacist as soon as possible.

Who can use this service
Adults aged 18 and over. It's free if you don't usually pay for prescriptions. If you do, any medicine supplied costs the standard NHS prescription charge.
Common symptoms
- Tingling or pain in one area of skin
- A rash of blisters on one side of your body
- Feeling generally unwell
How it works
- Walk in or book. Ask to see the pharmacist. You don't need a GP appointment or referral.
- Consultation. In a private room, the pharmacist asks about your symptoms and medical history and checks whether you meet the NHS criteria.
- Treatment or referral. If suitable, you'll get treatment and aftercare advice. If not, we'll give you advice or refer you to the right service.
When to get urgent help
Call 111 or go to A&E if you have a rash near your eye, changes to your vision, or if you have a weakened immune system. In an emergency, call 999.
