What is shingles?
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster) that lies dormant in the body. It can appear years after you’ve had chickenpox.
The rash usually clears within 2–4 weeks. It can be very painful.

- It is not available for children or those with complicated presentations
- Exclusions may apply (severe symptoms, existing health conditions, pregnancy) — your pharmacist will confirm if you fall outside the NHS scheme
- If you do NOT qualify Pharmacy First treatment, our in-pharmacy prescriber can help, see below.

Do I need to pay?
No. NHS funding covers the consultation. Prescription charges apply only if medication is supplied and you’re not exempt.
Can I bring my child?
Yes. The service is available for children aged 1 and over. Under-1s should see their GP.
Will antibiotics be given?
Not always. Many ear infections clear naturally. Antibiotics are prescribed only if clinically needed.
I’m over 24 – can I use this service?
Not under the NHS scheme. But our Independent Prescriber can see you privately for a fee.
What if it isn’t an ear infection?
We'll assess your symptoms carefully. If it's another condition, we'll refer you to the right healthcare service.
