Most sore throats are caused by viruses and get better on their own. Our pharmacist can check whether it's likely to be a bacterial infection that needs treatment.

Who can use this service
Adults and children aged 5 and over. It's free if you don't usually pay for prescriptions. If you do, any medicine supplied costs the standard NHS prescription charge.
Common symptoms
- A painful or scratchy throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Swollen tonsils or glands in your neck
- A high temperature
How it works
- Walk in or book. Ask to see the pharmacist. You don't need a GP appointment or referral.
- Consultation. In a private room, the pharmacist asks about your symptoms and medical history and checks whether you meet the NHS criteria.
- Treatment or referral. If suitable, you'll get treatment and aftercare advice. If not, we'll give you advice or refer you to the right service.
When to get urgent help
Call 111 or go to A&E if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, or a muffled voice. In an emergency, call 999.
